Abstract

We study the nonlinear dynamics of the DNA double helical chain using a DNA-protein interaction spin-like model. The presence of helicity is taken into account and the dynamical equations are reduced to the completely integrable nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Helicity is shown to bring about highly localized and extended bubbles in the model. It is argued that these bubbles can be used to explain the open-states in DNA, under the action of RNA-polymerase, within the process of transcription.
