Abstract
The first part of this work focuses on the implementation of a modified Activated Sludge Model No. 3 in the Benchmark Simulation Model No. 1. The mathematical model includes two additional processes that describe the direct growth of the heterotrophic biomass on readily biodegradable substrate, in both anoxic and oxic conditions. For a better representation of the real plant behavior, the secondary settler is considered to be reactive. The reactive settler model is a combination of the Takics settler model and the activated sludge model. The second part of the paper presents the implementation of two control strategies on the simulated wastewater treatment plant. The control architectures are assessed from an operational costs point of view, and improved by adding another level of control. The upper control level dictates the optimal set point for the two control structures by taking into consideration the influent ammonia nitrogen concentration in the aerated part of the wastewater treatment plant. The simulations showed that by using this improved control structure the operational costs can be significantly reduced.
