Abstract

This study details the permeability variations induced due to fluid sizing interaction for various fiber systems. Previous studies have reported a variation in measured permeability due to different fluids for the same preform. In this study two fluids of the same viscosity are used to separate the fluid sizing interaction resulting in variable permeability. Experiments are also carried out to observe the saturated flow behavior for these fiber preforms. Previous experiments on saturated flow behavior had led to the use of sink term in the continuity equation to explain dual scale flow behavior. The present experiments conducted using Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) show single scale flow behavior for a variety of tow sizes. The saturated flow results for VARTM show that the use of sink term is not warranted for higher fiber volume fractions.
