Abstract

Dyes are some of the biggest contributors to water pollution since approximately 15% of the produced dyes are lost in the wastewater. Reactive dyes make up to 30% of the dye market and their toxicity was reported at 5.2 mg/L. They have serious implications to the environment as well as human health. The investigation aims to evaluate the performance of polyaniline coated TiO2 as compared to uncoated TiO2 in removing reactive dyes from
wastewater. The TiO2 nanoparticles and aniline were stirred for 4
hours at a ratio of 5:1 (m/v) and the resultant suspension was
washed, filtered and dried. Various parameters such as pH, catalyst
loading, and dye concentration were studied for their effects on the
performance of the nanocomposites in sorption equilibrium and photocatalysis experiments. The results indicated that polyaniline coated titanium dioxide (PANI-TiO2) had better performance of 99.89% as compared to the 74.51% for the uncoated TiO2 at an optimum pH 3. An increase in mass (10-100 mg) will cause the colour removal to increase from 25.61% to 99.66%, while for the uncoated TiO2 the colour removal increase from 15.59 % to 93.56%. It is concluded that the PANI-TiO2 performed better than the uncoated TiO2 in colour removal of reactive black dye. It is
recommended that further experiments be performed using a
different reactive dye and different polymer composite.
